VA-Sen Webb Supporters: Not too late to GOTV

Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 01:20:42 PM PDT

I spend most of my "news gathering" time here on dKos, reading external sources linked from here.  I got tired of the Right-Wing Corporate Media ages ago, although sometimes I'll go to news.google.com to see what is going on in the world, if I'm bored at work.  So for some reason, given the opinion polls on dKos showing an 80-20 preference for Webb over Miller, Webb's credentials on the war, and his electability due to being Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, I figured that Webb would stand a good chance to win the primary today.  Then I went on vacation and talked to my dad.  Bad move.  Unfortunately I just got back today and couldn't diary until now.  My dad and I have had exactly two political arguments in the last 4-5 years.  First: I say Mark Warner is more electable than Hillary Clinton, he says Warner has no chance at any race outside the state of Virginia.  Second:  My dad says that Harris Miller is the better candidate.  More info on why this worries me below.
My dad lives in Hampton Roads, a very high-military area.  My dad's friends are mostly Republicans (most of the state is Republican).  My dad gets the news from his local paper, the Virginian Pilot, which is a conservative paper.  He also watches some CNN type news on TV.  He is well educated, and considers himself well informed on political matters.

The world according to my dad:
1) Harris Miller is a real Democrat, Jim Webb is not.  Dad was not aware that Harris Miller had donated to Dennis Hastert or to Sen Sununu of NH or any of a dozen other Republicans.  He only knew that Jim Webb had voted for George Allen and George Bush.
2) Why my dad knew this is his sources for information - the Virginian Pilot (which opposes Webb because they are a conservative paper and want Allen to win) and Harris Miller on the air and in the mail where Webb was not.

Also of note, my dad let me know that the Virginian Pilot has made a point of reminding everyone that today's primary is an open primary, meaning Republicans can (hint hint) go vote in the Democratic primary.  And we all know who the Republicans want to win (Harris Miller) - any Democrat who has alienated the biggest supporter on the left (the unions) and has no crossover appeal to the right won't break 40 in Virginia against George Allen.  Conversely, someone who has the grassroots and the netroots and the progressives and the unions in his corner (Webb) plus has crossover appeal to the Republicans (the soldier/secretary of navy thing) makes the Republicans shiver in their boots.

My dad is going to vote for Harris Miller.  Nothing I could say could change his mind.  Because of that, my stepmother will also vote for Harris Miller.  My sister, who I only lobbied a little bit for Webb because I didn't know how militantly my dad opposed him, voted for Miller absentee.

I think that the people who go to Democratic Party meetings or who are active volunteers are going to vote for Webb 80-20 easy.  However there are other people who vote in primaries.  And I'm really nervous because Miller sent about 8-10 pieces of mail to my house and Webb only 2 (plus 2 thank you notes for donations I gave).  Good news - I was out over the weekend so all my robocalls were saved to my voice mail - got one from Harris Miller, one from Jim Webb, one from some woman on behalf of Harris Miller, and one from Chap Petersen on behalf of Jim Webb.  So they split even 2-2.  (Plus one for Andrew Hurst for congress, who I also voted for).

If you're a Webb supporter and you think he's going to cruise to victory because of what you've read here - please make sure you vote, and start nagging others to get to the polls, we have 2 1/2 hours before they close (7pm EDT).

Thanks all,
-Fred
